21 Nov Grapple-A-Thon 2: “The Relief Nursery”- Update
On November 16th, 2013, over 50 martial artists, from all over Oregon, gathered at Performance Martial Arts Academy to fundraise for Eugene’s Relief Nursery (www.reliefnursery.org). The Relief Nursery is a non-profit organization that specializes in helping victims of child abuse. Participants as young as 8 years old gathered donations, and tested themselves for 6 grueling hours of grappling.
A big thank you to the Eugene Taiko Drumming Association for playing 3 great sets of songs during the event. Many of the participants commented on how cool Japanese drumming was to listen to while grappling. One participant described the feeling of being in a movie, because the drumming was so, “epic sounding”.
There were also generous prizes up for grabs to the event’s top performers. Joshua Stroud earned himself a brand new Jiu-Jitsu gi, donated by OSS, for bringing in the highest dollar donation amount! Super-Human, Ryne Cox, completed 57 consecutive 5 min rounds of grappling, and for his efforts was hooked up by the guys at Rise Fight Shop with a great shirt, among other winnings!
Now for the big news: With all the donations freshly counted, the total donation to the Relief Nursery is a staggering $3,350.00!!! This just goes to show how generous the Northwest martial arts community is, and how much fun it is to gather together and do what we love to do- grapple!
Thank you to everyone who came together and helped us fight child abuse in Lane County!
